Currently in a relationship:
- Have a safe place to go if an argument occurs (try to avoid rooms without
exits and with weapons).
- Create a list of safe people to contact.
- Keep change with you at all times.
- If a police officer comes, tell him/her what happened; get his/her name &
badge number.
- Memorize all important numbers.
- Create "code word" or "sign" and inform all family, friends, teachers or co-
workers so they know when to call for help.
- Know what you will say to your partner if he\she becomes violent.
Recently in a relationship:
- Change your phone number and screen calls.
- Keep a record of all contacts, messages, injuries or other incidents involving
the abuser.
- Change locks, if the abuser has a key.
- Avoid staying alone.
- Have a plan to get away if confronted by an abuser.
- If you must meet your abuser, do it in a public place.
- Vary your routine.
- Notify school and work contacts.
- Call a shelter for survivors of domestic abuse.
At work:
- Keep a copy of your protective order at work.
- Give a picture and description of the abuser to security and coworkers.
- Inform your supervisors, they may be able to make it harder for the abuser
to find you.
- Never go to lunch alone.
- Ask someone to walk you to your car or to the bus.
- Save all voice mail and e-mail messages from the abuser.
- Your employer may be able to help you find community resources.
